When our two year old was potty training my husband, in a moment of weakness, promised her an iPhone. Now, we might be more gadget-friendly than most, but we are not buying our two year old an iPhone. We do believe in following through with our promises, though.
The compromise was buying her a refurbished iPod Touch on Woot.com. It looks like an iPhone, is loaded up with her favorite apps and she can even Facetime with Nana. Added bonus: she has her own gadget and we don’t have to give her ours.
iPod Touches still aren’t cheap, and my biggest concern has been whether this new “toy” will get broken.
Fisher-Price has come up with a great solution in their Apptivity case designed for babies as young as 6 months old.
In its Play Lab, Fisher-Price found that babies— only six to nine months old— who were just learning to sit up, already knew how to swipe and handle an iPhone and where the location and function of the home button was!

Good for Fisher-Price for embracing this new kid tech era. I get so frustrated when I hear parents say, “Oh, I don’t let my baby play with my iPhone.”
My question is: Why not?
Technology isn’t going away. The more comfortable and curious our kids (especially our girls) are the better off they will be in the long run. You know who’s running the successful e-commerce and tech companies now? Kids who played tons of video games and were curious about how computers worked. You know what else? Not many of the people running tech companies are women.
So let them play. Now you can have piece of mind that your expensive gadgets are protected from drops and drool.

Our daughter seems to love the Apptivity case, but at almost three years old, has just about outgrown it. One of the features of the case is an extra piece of plastic that blocks the home button, so your little one doesn’t mistakenly call Africa or erase important emails. Our daughter is savvy enough to move between apps now, and this blocked home button just serves to frustrate her. You can put the iPhone or iPod touch in upside down, but the home button is still difficult to push.
Looks like we’ll be moving to the Kid-Tough Apptivity Case made for 3 year olds and up soon.

All my kids play with our iPhones. It’s a huge help at Dr appointments or when shopping for groceries to feed 7 people. I do worry a lot about them dropping them or breaking them somehow but, I also know its just a “thing” it’s replaceable my peace at the Dr.’s office or while grocery shopping is not
I’ve got 3 kids so I could certainly use some extra security for the ipod touch!
I don’t have any expensive gadgets so this would be great for Nate. Sometimes, my older son lets him play games on his Kindle but that makes me nervous.
My daughter is 5 and she has been using a non-activated iPhone since she was 2 without incident. Well, one time she left it sitting somewhere in Sam’s Club. We Nascar’d back and nabbed it from the lost and found!
I realize that my honesty probably puts me in the “he’s not going to get a kid-tough case, now” category, but I just had to share. In that same amount of time, my wife has: Lost her phone completely, dropped it in the toilet, dropped it in the bathtub and hurled it into a kiddie pool. I need to put greater restrictions on my wife’s usage. I see a WifeProof case in her future. Zing.
HAHA! Your wife and I are equally hard on iPhones. I had one with a cracked front and shattered back for a while. It still worked so I put a case on it and kept using it… until it started scratching my face.

I don’t have a kiddo but I am an auntie! My little 3 year old niece, Jocelyn, is more advanced at handling her parents iPhone that I am of mine! It is insane.

I just wish we had know about it when Charlie was teething. It’s hard to explain drool damage and teeth marks.
I’d give it to my friend who is expecting her 1st. As a therapist using technology is wonderful with some of our kiddos-it’s amazing not only the educational apps available but also for communication for kiddos that may be unable to convey needs, wants, etc.
I love the news stories about the ways iPads and iPhones are being used to help people who can’t communicated in other ways. Very cool.
I already let my 1 and 5 year olds play with my phone- but get a little weary when my youngest has it on the potty (one slip and byebye iPhone). I would feel much more comfortable letting them have my phone with this new apptivity product!
The potty is my biggest iPhone fear!

Are these cases indestructible, and can they fit in my purse? I have no problem letting little kids play with old phones etc once Mommy gets an upgrade, but why does an expensive piece of equipment have to be a waiting room toy? What happened to keys? That’s a good toy.
You make a valid point. Charlie almost alway loves the packaging more than the toy when she gets a gift.

It depends on the gadget and which kid.
I don’t mind handing the iPhone or iPad to my 4.5 yr old but I wouldn’t give them to my 1.5 yr old. He’s a bit too rough with everything and has a tendency to throw it clear across the room when he’s done.
Some little ones have incredible throwing arms, don’t they!

I love the cases and the idea of it. In philosophy I have no problem letting a toddler play with my iPhone, but in practice I’m too nervous about handing my phone over. If I break it all the time, what’s going to happen when the toddler touches it? I’d love one of these gadgets for my toddler and pre-school nephew and nieces. Great Christmas idea!

With my 2 1/2 year old, its a craps shoot, sometimes she treats our devices with kid gloves, sometimes they come back a milk smeared mess. But she has embraced technology and is really understanding what she’s doing, whether its playing a game, like Monkey Lunchbox, which she loooves! or watching netflix (she’s faster at starting a new show than mom or dad).

My 2.5 year old loves playing with my iPhone & big brother’s iPad, I never thought about an iPod Touch. Guess what he is getting for his birthday!
It’s the perfect gadget for little ones.
My kids all have their on Ipod touch. We have had to get screens replaced. So this would get a lot of use at our house.
6-month-olds!!!??? Well now I’m thinking our almost two-yr-old grandbaby isn’t as genius as we thought.
. She is an iPhone, iPad, iPod whiz. She uses the iPad only when seated, but the phones have otter boxes so she carries them around occasionally. I can’t imagine what the technology will be when she’s my age. Crazy.
Isn’t it insane Laurie! I was baffled the first time Charlie swiped the screen because I had never directly shown her how to do it.
I never let my girls touch my iphone. I did let them play with my touch on occasion. I thought about keeping the touch for them but had a good buyer so I didn’t. I was curious about this gadget case I saw a kid playing with, thanks for the review.
