Writing Exercises with Bianca Olthoff {Blissdom 2013}

Writing with Bianca Olthoff: Exercise 1 {Blissdom 2013}

| On 02, Apr 2013

One of the best breakout sessions at Blissdom 13 was a writing session led by feisty latina storyteller Bianca Olthoff, who was raised in the ghetto in California by her Mexican immigrant and preacher father. You have to hear her story in her own words.

Now she is the Chief Storyteller for The A21 Campaign, a global anti-human trafficking organization.

Bianca didn’t learn to read until she was eleven, but she has been devouring books ever since. This woman loves a story almost as much as she loves Jesus.

If that all sounds very intense, don’t worry… she’s also HILARIOUSLY funny, transparent and bold. She has grit, sass and faith, three of my favorite character traits.

In her session she asked us to get very real and very personal with her exercises.

Exercise One:
Why do you write? Why does it matter? How does it change the world?

  • I write to get it out, to affirm myself and who I am, to help others feel okay and to entertain.
  • It matters because I want to be more comfortable in my own skin and I want the same for other women.
  • It changes the world by letting other women know that we all have stories, we all have messed up lives. I am no better or worse than anyone else and neither are you.

Come back tomorrow for Exercise 2
