Empathy vs. Sympathy - Evolved Mommy

Empathy vs. Sympathy

| On 12, Jan 2014

I’ve been following Brene Brown for a couple months now. Her Ted Talks are magnetic.

But check out this fun animation of her talk on empathy vs sympathy

A few of my other favorites of hers:
On vulnerability…

On listening to shame…

Did you watch any of these? Would you agree with what Brene Brown says?

  1. Stephanie! I so love this post, and BB’s awesome animation about the difference between empathy and sympathy. I completely agree with her take on it. She uses the word “connection” and I, probably synonymously, use + practice the word “presence.” Either way, with both those terms, the end-goal is *not* to fix, compare, minimize or “silver-line.” Instead, empathy calls for a much more courageous response, which is to WITNESS and BE WITH the person going through the red-hot crap. I think the simplicity of that can make people feel like they are not “doing” much. And, in truth, they aren’t. The offer of quiet, humble companionship… the willingness to descend into the Dark Place with another, IMHO, is the heart of empathy. May we more often be like the bear :-)
