Writing with Bianca Olthoff: Exercise 3 {Blissdom 2013}

Writing with Bianca Olthoff: Exercise 3 {Blissdom 2013}

| On 04, Apr 2013

Don’t worry if Exercise 3 is the first you’re seeing this “Writing with Bianca Olthoff” series. Links the the first two are at the bottom of this post.

Writing Exercise Three: Write a short short story (minimum of one sentence, maximum of three sentences)
“For sale: baby shoes, never used.” – Ernest Hemingway
Hemingway considered this work, composed over a bet with friends, his best.

Six words is hard. Bianca gave us a little more room.

* The Merlot in her glass smelled thick, salty, buttery and dangerous.
* Sweeping up the glass, she cried hard
* She remembered her mother’s advice: Always wear waterproof mascara. Always.

Brevity is best, and it is painfully difficult sometimes. How much do you edit your work? There’s definitely an argument in blogging for just putting it all out there as fast as you can.

Also, music. Why have I never been intentional about what music I listen to while writing? During Bianca’s session I “Shezam’d” the song playing because it was perfectly present and inspirational without being distracting. FYI, It was “Oceans” from the Hillsong United album.
